Melatonin is naturally formed in our bodies in the pineal gland of the brain. Since some people do not form sufficient melatonin it may be necessary to orally take a low dosage 2-5mg. It is a way to cope better when one has lost sleep or has jet lag. It is also important to try to have a restful environment for sleep--no electronic devices prior to bed and a dark, quiet room. Diet may also have some effect on a person not producing enough melatonin on their own. Make sure you eat a well balanced diet with lots of vegetables and fruits and less sugar and sodium. Exercise plays a part, as it tires the body usually for sufficient sleep. Relaxation also is key to being able to sleep well and some therapeutic relaxation practices may be helpful.
